Kia ora koutou, as one of the candidates nominated for this year’s School Board Parent Elections, I would like to introduce myself. I am Tim Stephens, dad to two daughters, one who began at Wheunakite School at the beginning of 2023 and the other will start in term two, 2024. Along with my wife, I have lived in Hahei for 15 years and own and operate a couple of small local businesses on the peninsula. For the past two years I’ve been fortunate to have served as an active member on the Whenuakite Country Kids Committee. It is here, I have gained valuable insight into positive learning culture, strategic planning and acquiring external funding. I’m also currently the Treasurer of Hahei Sports Club and enjoy participating in numerous sports alongside my family. This role, over the many years has involved multiple start up sports and gaining the funding to do so. I consider myself a good strategic thinker and collaborator, who takes a calm approach to problem solving. For me, being a parent on the School Board is about contributing to the achievement of positive student and kaiako outcomes. I believe in power of education to further young people to achieve their potential, in whatever vocation they choose; and that the foundation of fulfilling this potential is the greater inclusion of sports, cultural activities, arts, STEM etc. plus any new initiatives that celebrate the diversity and range of cultures we have here, in our epic community. It is my goal is to keep Whenuakite School progressing and growing; while preserving a fun, safe and positive environment for our tamariki, as they pursue in their journey to success.
