After Embarking on a journey of heritage and community spirit, our school has delved into the rich tapestry of its past to resurrect the cherished tradition of house groups. Through our consultation with community around houses, we've uncovered a treasured relic (taonga) from our past: an old house shield dating back to the 1970s. This discovery was exciting, and we are thrilled to announce the revival of the house groups:
These names, steeped in history, nostalgia, reflect our local environment and ideals around teamwork. These also reflect the wishes of 78% of our community, who expressed a preference for themes inspired by local fauna and flora through trees and birds, we're delighted to honour our natural surroundings through these symbolic choices.
Every student has been placed in a house, ensuring a balanced mix of talents and diversity across the board. Our teachers gathered with students and introduced them to their respective houses, setting the stage for a future filled with teamwork, leadership, and school spirit. Together, we'll explore ideas for house leaders, mascots, chants, and attire, fostering a sense of belonging and pride in each child. As Gordon explained TEAM stands for – Together Everyone Achieves Most.

House events happen throughout the year, where we'll engage in tabloids, sports, fun events, discos, athletics, cross country, cultural, academic and technology based challenges to be the winning House. During these events we often do fundraisers to support community groups. It's an opportunity for us to showcase not only our sportsmanship and critical thinking abilities, but also our commitment to standing up for kindness and inclusion. We invite parents and students alike to join us in this celebration of unity and shared values, as we embark on this exciting new chapter together.
Kind Regards from the Whenuakite team and Gary Veysi, principal@whenuakite.school.nz .
