Some suggestions which may help your child to be ready to start School

When starting school, it can be scary for parents as well as the children. We understand that this is a very special time in your life, and we want to make it as smooth as possible.

Ways to help your child start off to be a k.i.t.e Kid and seeing them grow into Kind, Innovative, Trustworthy and Enthusiastic children is to talk about and promote these values at home. We also want to know as much about your child as possible, as we believe each child is unique and holds their own super power of learning. It is up to us to engage this super power to get the very best out of your child.

Below are a list of ideas that may help your child settle in, however, please remember that each child is different and will learn at different rates. If your child cannot do these, we will teach them.

There are a number of things that are helpful for your child to be able to do when they start school or kura:

  • put on and take off their coats

  • go to the toilet and wash their hands

  • blow their nose

  • recognise when they are thirsty and get a drink of water

  • ask for things they need.

They may find it easier to participate in the class if they:

  • know the names of colours

  • know the letters of the alphabet

  • know the numbers 1 to 9

  • can hold a pencil and use scissors

  • can write their name

  • are able to hold a picture book and turn the pages carefully.
